Technocracy’s end-of-life rally

I have a piece in Damage Magazine discussing what we on Aufhebunga Bunga call “Neoliberal Order Breakdown Syndrome”, and how it is likely to be affected by Covid-19.

In the article, I argue that we are seeing a brief resurgence for “technocracy” – or rule by experts – because of the pandemic. Politicians visibly “following the science” has put the liberal establishment and its supporters at ease, because it feels like the battles over populism have passed. “Populism”, recall, often aims its guns at supposedly elitist, evidence-based politics.

It’s my contention, however, that this will prove short-lived, and the hysterical reactions that have characterised liberal politics since 2016 will re-emerge.
